De Bortoli’s Yarra Valley Estate Grown wines are sourced from the De Bortoli family vineyards at Dixon’s Creek in the cool climate Yarra Valley. The mature, low yielding vines deliver exceptional quality fruit to the winery. This is preserved during winemaking with gentle, low intervention techniques to produce wine with varietal detail and purity.
This wine, De Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate Grown Pinot Noir 2012 is from the prestigious Dixon’s Creek vineyards in Yarra Valley, hand crafted by perhaps the most innovative and progressive Pinot protagonist in Australia. Pinot Noir can be tricky to grow and to make into wine, De Bortoli take the greatest effort at developing deep flavours within the grapes as they ripen, while remaining in the pursuit of judicious alcohol and congenial tannins.
De Bortoli have spared no expense at husbanding the finest Pinot Noir vineyards in Yarra Valley, retaining the best sites and have produced the finest vintages for decades.
In the 2012 season, near perfect growing conditions meant that winemaker Steve Webber didn’t see sufficient difference between his Reserve Pinot Noir and his Estate Grown parcels, so all the Reserve went into the Estate Grown wine. Good fruit maturity, high natural acidity, abundant flavour at moderate alcohols and generally a relaxed vintage team during the harvest.
Fruit is hand picked off the choicest estate blocks, which are holistically managed to the most exacting environmentally sustainable standards. All grapes and a small amount of whole bunches are individually examined over a sorting table, before being tipped into traditional open top fermenters, for three weeks of maceration and vinification through the action of wild indigenous yeasts. Batches are pressed and settled overnight, followed by gravity fill into a selection of 225L French oak casks for nine months maturation at a salutary 16°C.
The result is a richly textured, elegantly structured Pinot Noir, a solid, Burgundy styled wine with savoury red fruit pectin, mineral and lithe spice.

Medium depth, vibrant garnet colour. Wonderful intense fruit bouquet, cherry and raspberry with cinnamon spice and forest floor. Cinnamon and strawberry fruit, medium to high acidity and medium bodied building weight across the palate. Richly textured, long length with a cherry fruit finish which is supported by firm yet gentle tannins. Will continue to develop complexity and interest for five to ten years in a good cellar.
